DOORS: List of manufacturers who offer reclaimed wood doors

July 8, 2007

Reclaimed wood is wood that is “rescued” from existing structures and re-purposed. But, it’s not just any wood. Wood that is reclaimed, is wood that was harvested in the mid 1900′s. It is wood that came from “first growth” forests that had never been logged. Some benefits of reclaimed wood:

  • Natural Beauty – First and foremost the color, character and patina are far more visible than new second growth wood. Each reclaimed wood door (or floorboard) is original and tells a historical story.
  • Stability and Durability – The reclaimed wood has already experienced a century of expansion/contraction and air drying. In addition first growth trees offer a higher and denser ring count leading to what many believe is better durability
  • Clarity – Old-growth trees and hand selection greatly reduce the # of knots, pitch pockets, wane, sapwood and other natural defects.
  • Green – Helps to prevent the destruction of remaining old-growth forests, and it is also believed that fewer resources are required to create reclaimed wood products.

If you have found another source, please add a Comment below and let GetWithGreen readers know! SmartWood Certification Systems estimates that reclaiming one million board feet of lumber preserves one thousand acres of old growth forest.
