FLOORING: Thinking bamboo floors…here is the definitive list of suppliers

July 18, 2007

Research will quickly tell you that bamboo is actually not a wood, but a grass.  Bamboo is a grass that regenerates itself within 4-6 years, thus making it an excellent renewable resource. Ultimately to make it a green product, we all need to make sure that forest lands are not cut down in order to plant this renewable plant that offers a green flooring product.  Below is a list of providers of manufacturers of bamboo flooring products - virtually all are from China.

We have noted several suppliers that in our research stand out.  We don’t have experience working with suppliers, but we wanted to call out those that were the most informative to us - so look for our notes below.  Here is the list:

I LOVE BAMBOO!!!
I found a bamboo product at lumber liquidators in San Jose! After installing about 700 sq/ft in high traffic areas (dogs and bikes frequent this area) I have yet to find any obvious scratches or discoloration. I installed the lighter, vertically alligned, click and lock bamboo. It was super easy and quick to install- after the initial row! Next time I will order online for better selection.

I am a little concerned about products coming from China (and the other countries they are destroying as well). It is one thing to try to buy eco, but it is another one to check out the sources.
Is there a way to know them for sure?
Anyhow it seems to be the best option…

I am researching bamboo flooring sold by iFLOOR. Has anyone found any information on the following manufacurers? : Lotus Land Quick Click Bamboo Floors, Ming Dynasty Bamboo, or Springwood? IFLOOR also offers products from Anhui under the AMPU brand but that web site offers VERY little information in badly translated chinese.

we’ve had bamboo for 2+ years in a heavy traffic area. It IS showing wear and tear (dropping the washing machine on it didn’t help..). we have 3 medium size dogs, and a southern exposure window (i have friends who purchased the same product and their carbonization has faded from sun exposure). we have the carbonized horizontal strand. all that being said.. we always get compliments on the beauty of the floor! it really is a warm, inviting surface, and a distinct look. i am now considering doing more floors over, and am getting serious about strand woven bamboo - supposed to be extremely hard. as to the bamboo coming from china, my limited research indicates that almost all lower priced flooring comes from china - no matter if it’s laminate, bamboo, or cheaper hardwoods. only the pricey stuff i can’t afford is made in america anymore!
