Don't forget about reclaimed wood as a great option. Using something twice is always the best eco-friendly option. To see something beyond the boring butcher block style stuff, check out www.solemreclaimed.com.

There is a great recycled glass aggregate terrazzo countertop made in the midwest called Rinato. It is distributed in 13 colors by Terrazzo & Marble Supply in Wheeling (suburb of Chicago) IL. They have this material installed in the Green Home down at the Museum of Science & Industry and it turned out quite nice. The material will is not only recycled but is also a great locally manufactured product for those living in the midwest. You view the standard colors at Rinato.com.

Consider concrete countertops made locally with recycled glass, local aggregates and/or post industrial bi-products for a fabulous green alternative.

Same goes for ArtistStone and they are located in the Seattle area. Using only local materials including recycled glass. You can find them at artiststone@comcast.net

Granite is bad because it is mined from the earth and then put in your kitchen until you or the next person in your house change your mind on the color - then it ends up in a landfill. Plus it is generally shipped from all over the world which creates a huge carbon footprint.
