HOME COMPUTING: EPEAT makes finding eco-friendly home computers easy

October 27th, 2007

Your home computers may get an overhaul during your remodel.  How do you pick a greener more-eco-friendly product?  One way to approach the purchase is by quickly visiting the Electronic Product Environment Assessement Tool (EPEAT).

EPEAT logoEPEAT is a system to help homeowners evaluate, compare, and select desktop computers, notebooks, and monitors based on their environmental attributes.  EPEAT provides a product “registry” on their website.  The EPEAT Registry includes products that have been declared by their manufacturers to be in conformance with specific environmental standards.  EPEAT also operates a verification program to assure the credibility of this Registry.

Computer products are rated in (3) categories based on green criteria that they meet.  Below we provide you with the levels (listed from best to worst below):

EPEAT GoldProduct meets all required criteria plus at least 75% of the optional criteria that apply to the product type being registered.

October 26th, 2007

With winter just around the corner, we now have access to a tool that can help us evaluate and possibly reduce our energy bills up to 25 percent by making some simple improvements around the home, according to the EPA.  The new tool from EPA, the Energy Star Home Advisor, provides consumers with customized recommendations for improving energy efficiency and comfort at home. And as we know, using energy more efficiently is also another way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

COUNTERTOPS: First there was PaperStone, now there is EcoTop

October 19th, 2007

ecotop paperstone eco-friendlyContinuing with our trend of bringing you the most up-to-date information about greener countertop materials, GetWithGreen.com sat down with Joel Klippert to discuss his new company and countertop product - EcoTop!

In the Beginning

Before we get into the details of EcoTop, we need to introduce you to EcoTop creator, Joel Klippert.  While Joel’s product is just now hitting the market, Joel is by far no stranger to eco-friendly countertops.  In 2001 Joel founded KlipTech Composites, Inc., and produced the well know PaperStone countertop product.  At the time Joel wanted a strong, durable product made out of recycled materials.  Being an early innovator in the eco-friendly countertop market, Joel’s team created the best product they could offer at time given that supporting suppliers (e.g. paper, wood, & resin) were less interested in our environment.  Pushing forward, Joel brought PaperStone to market, and since that time it has grown to what we all know it as today.

Joel assembled a dream team of inventors and This post continues…
