COUNTERTOPS: First there was PaperStone, now there is EcoTop

October 19, 2007

ecotop paperstone eco-friendlyContinuing with our trend of bringing you the most up-to-date information about greener countertop materials, GetWithGreen.com sat down with Joel Klippert to discuss his new company and countertop product - EcoTop!

In the Beginning

Before we get into the details of EcoTop, we need to introduce you to EcoTop creator, Joel Klippert.  While Joel’s product is just now hitting the market, Joel is by far no stranger to eco-friendly countertops.  In 2001 Joel founded KlipTech Composites, Inc., and produced the well know PaperStone countertop product.  At the time Joel wanted a strong, durable product made out of recycled materials.  Being an early innovator in the eco-friendly countertop market, Joel’s team created the best product they could offer at time given that supporting suppliers (e.g. paper, wood, & resin) were less interested in our environment.  Pushing forward, Joel brought PaperStone to market, and since that time it has grown to what we all know it as today.

Joel assembled a dream team of inventors and Read more

Eco-friendly TV: Which 37″ LCD televisions are the most efficient?

October 13, 2007

LG LCD 37Time to talk TV’s, and their power consumption. Today we will look specifically at the power consumption of 37″ LCDs. This is a typical television that many of us hang on the wall in our kitchen as part of the home remodel project.

Before we get to the TVs, let’s discuss power consumption for a moment. There are two parts of power consumption when talking televisions. The first is Standyby Power Consumption (when your TV is turned OFF), and the second is On Mode Power Consumption (when you TV is turned ON)

Standby Power Consumption is what ENERGY STAR uses to rate TVs today. This is the energy your TV uses while it is just sitting there during the day. It is the lowest power consumption mode that cannot be switched OFF by a homeowner. To qualify for ENERGY STAR a television must Read more

CEILING FANS: How do you select the right one?

October 12, 2007

ceiling fan eco-friendly efficient energy starHow do you choose the best ceiling fan, and save on energy?  Read more from a guest writer, and Monte Carlo Fan Co. here on GetWithGreen.com…

CEILING FAN CAN LOWER BILLS
By Mary Beth Breckenridge

Ceiling fans help you lower both your cooling and heating bills.   Here are some tips from Monte Carlo Fan Co. for choosing and using a fan:

For best results, mount the ceiling fan in the middle of the room, at least 7 feet above the floor and 18 inches from the walls. If you have a tall-enough ceiling, installing the fan 8 to 9 feet above the floor will produce optimal air flow.

Select the right-size fan for the room. A good retailer should be able to help you choose the correct size. A 10-by-10-foot room, for example, should have a 38- to 48-inch fan; a 15-by-15-foot room needs one that’s 52 to 56 inches across.
