SOLAR: Are you ready for Ready Solar and their “Solar in a Box”?
October 28, 2007
Got Solar? Have you seen ”Solar in a Box”?
In an effort to streamline the hurdles and costs associated with installing a residential solar energy system, the team at Ready Solar is now offering what they call a standardized modular solar energy appliance in an effort to bring solar energy to households across America. The product is called Solar in a Box.
Solar in a Box
Solar in a Box is a pre-built solar power solution for homeowners. The product/appliance includes:
- Ready Solar’s beautiful and easy to install frame mounting system (in a variety of colors)
- Top quality, high-efficiency solar panels
- State of the art DC-AC inverter with integrated disconnects & combiner box
- Roof jacks & flashing
- Comprehensive and simple installation instructions
- System positioning instructions
- Pre-configured wiring diagrams
- Electrical engineer certified permit drawings
- Rebate and utility interconnect agreements
- Just-in-Time delivery to your job site
- Telephone technical support
- Web-based monitoring included
- 10+ year warranty
Why a ”packaged” solar solution?
The company recommends using a licensed contractor and electrician to perform the installation. But why offer a packaged solar product for homeowners? Lower installation cost (a substantial cost of solar), faster to deliver (predesigned product ready to ship to your home), and reliability (pre-tested system that has been replicated many times vs. a custom solar solution). Additional benefits include; fewer roof penetrations and parts and fewer site visits to plan your solar solution. See this list of Ready Solar installers.
Solar in a Box…how many boxes do I need, and how much does a “box” cost?
Each 1-kilowatt (kW) 6′5″ x 19′7″ Ready Solar appliance sits ideally on a South or West facing roof, and can produce as much as 177 kWh/month depending on what part of the US you live in. The smallest size 7-panel Solar in a Box system is the Solar in a Box 1250. This is a single appliance that carries an MSRP of $9,780. Standard packaged solutions exist for 1 unit up to the 8 panel Solar in a Box 10000 package. (see picture to left – Sunset Magazine Idea House, Truckee, CA Photo: Tom Story)
