LANDSCAPING: Ecosource Launches New Bio Pot Concept
January 23, 2008
Traditional options for potted landscape has been clay pottery, or plastic. There are now new options for your new deck, or new patio following your remodel. You can now buy back- and frontyard pottery made from renewable grain husks that are:
- Made from natural by-products of renewable and sustainable crops
- contain no wood or petroleum ingredients
- deplete no natural resources
- naturally breakdown to easily decompose in landfills or into the earth
These new types of plant containers can last 3-5 years under normal usage, are suitable for all climates, and are resistant to freezing and thawing damage. The pots keep their shape until their end of life, and then when discarded into a landfill they decompose into organic matter.
ecosource Home & Garden is one supplier of these new style of backyard pottery. The company distributes three different lines. The greenPots are made from a rice hulls (price range: $6-21). The Enviro Collection are made from bamboo (price range: $4-12), and the new COIR line — just announced yesterday!
COIR is the third line of biodegradable pots, and they are made from coconut fibers. The product was unveiled at the recent Atlanta International Gift and Home Furnishings Market in Atlanta where the company received a “Best in Category” award from the Market. The addition of this third line of pots makes ecosource’s selection of biodegradable pots the largest in the growing green marketplace.
The addition of this third line of pots supplements the existing greenPots line and the Enviro Collection making ecosource’s selection of biodegradable pots the largest in the marketplace — according to ecosource. The launch was in response to strong consumer and retailer interest in larger eco-friendly vessels for container gardening.
COIR repurposes a well known utilitarian gardening product to create stunning stand alone decorative containers. “The response has been overwhelming” says Chad Callihan, ecosource managing partner. “ We’re seeing a huge increase in consumer awareness of environmentally-friendly garden pots since last year. Everyone is really beginning to embrace the green movement.”
COIR is now the largest line of eco-friendly decorative pots on the market, according to ecosource. Organic texture juxtaposed with contemporary styling, the pots fill a demand for larger containers with the largest in the line being 24 inches wide. The heaviest of the containers is just 5 pounds making them easy to move around, and perfect for any outdoor space, especially balconies and rooftop gardens.
“This launch uniquely positions ecosource in the growing market for biodegradable pots” says co-owner, Chuck Rose. “In response to retailer demand, we’re constantly developing new products to offer widest variety of eco-friendly planters in the US in terms of color, material, style and size. We’re 100% eco-friendly and we offer the largest containers available. The addition of COIR has enabled our company to strategically differentiate from the competition and still stay true to our earth-friendly foundation principles. Who says you can’t have high style and still help save the planet?”

The greenPots and Enviro Collection are available today from numerous retailers across the US, as well as online. The COIR line of pottery will be available in March. Click here for a list of ecosource retailers.
