Landscaping: First Eco-Friendly Grass Seed Announced

Yesterday, Pennington Seed unveiled ‘Smart Seed’, which they claim is the first environmentally-friendly grass seed. The seeds are coated with their ‘MYCO Advantage’, an exclusive blend of beneficial, all-natural root organisms that contribute to plant growth. The additional nutrients have been shown to result in denser and deeper root systems helping to achieve a thick, healthy, more drought resistant lawn.
According to Pennington, the average lawn requires 10,000 gallons of water in addition to what is provided by rainfall each year. By planting a new lawn or over seeding an existing lawn with Smart Seed, homeowners can conserve up to 3,000 gallons of water per year, so they can conserve water and save money.
Smart Seed is available in Tall Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Rye and Bermudagrass seed blends, as well as Sun and Shade, Fescue/Bluegrass and Dense Shade seed mixtures.

Wildflower farms in Ontario, Canada, have had ‘Eco-Lawn’ for a couple of years. It’s simply a blend of slow growing, deep root, fescue grasses. It’s main selling point is that it grows so slowly you only have to mow it around once a month, saving gas and possibly your marriage. It’s deep root system makes it so you don’t have to water it because it can survive fine on just your natural rain water in the areas that it’s marketed.
As an even better point, in areas that you don’t really want to mow the eco lawn only grows so tall and then is so fine it just slumps over so it never gets really nasty looking like most grasses.

We live in California just north of San Francisco in Marin County. We are constantly in drought fear. Very Med. climate.
Wet winter and dry rest of the year. Would any of your eco grasses work here? Water to expensive but we’d love to keep some grass.

Thanks but no thanks – “they” also claimed BT was “safe” and natural. . . the last thing I want in my lawn is an unknown untested chemical someone came up with to coat grass so it “becomes” low maintenance.
We’ll be putting in an eco-friendly low maintenance lawn this summer because we just saw the movie HOME. I think we’ll be going with a naturally short grass that needs less mowing, watering and once it is established – it grows so think it resists weed seed from reaching the ground. We’ll be using seed from NoMowGrass.com – And they’ve been around since 1994.
That’s a product that is SAFE and really natural for a lawn. Tarri
Hey – EcoLawn Fine Fescues are available for 1/3 the price at most garden stores. I can get fine fescues anywhere. The only thing I can’t seem to find for less is that No Mowing grass. I called them and they say it is a supine bentgrass. So I’m looking and I can’t find it anywhere else. Anyone else know where to get it for less?
