Not too long ago I received a gift massage, from my husband, to our local wellness center: Balance.  I was immediately smitten by the look of their reception counter.  When I learned that it was created from Kirei Board, I was even more impressed.

Much like plywood, kirei is a composite material, though it is made from the reclaimed stocks of sorghum plant.  Sorghum are a species of grass that are widely used.  Some species of sorghum grasses are used to feed livestock.  Others are used in alcoholic beverages and bio fuel.  Many gluten-free eaters will recognize it as flour safe for their consumption.  Certain species of sorghum are considered a staple in Africa, South Asia, and Central America, as they are the fifth largest cereal crop grown throughout the world.

Sorghum is a drought tolerant plant and grown all over the world.  Instead of burning the stalks or disposing them in waterways and landfills, a new interior finishing material is created.  You’ll also be pleased to know that the Kirei is combined with non-formaldehyde adhesive.

The natural patterns and geometry are simply beautiful in various interior design projects such as furniture, flooring, cabinetry, table tops, wall covering and paneling.  Affordably found starting at around $7 a square foot.

Cautions – Though very durable, if abused, the surface may be damaged.  Most substances will not stain Alkemi’s surface, but acidic liquids such as lemon juice and red wine will have an adverse effect if left on the surface for too long.  Alkemi is not recommended for flooring and outdoor use.

Just this past week I sat down with Joel Klippert, the creator of the ‘green’ EcoTop countertop .  I’d been anxious to talk with Joel about how things were going with his business, and the availability of EcoTop – the beautiful, practical, and affordable eco-friendly and green countertop material you’ve read so much about on GetWithGreen.com.   Joel is calling it “Sustainable without sacrifice.”

The Cyber-Rain XCI System caused quite a bit of stir at GetWithGreen.com in 2007.  It was one of the most widely read stories, and for good reason.  Resetting the sprinkler timer at every change of season, or for un-seasonal weather changes, just isn?t practical ? and we don?t do it!  Instead we just let our sprinklers turn on when it is not necessary, and we waste our most precious resource.  The Cyber-Rain XCI System made it to our list because it automatically adjusts our sprinklers depending on the weather forecast, thus greatly reducing water usage, and associated needless run-off.                                      

2)   EcoTop- The next generation recycled paper and wood composite countertop

4)   Solar Tunnel Skylights- Who needs CFL’s or LED’s when you have one of these?!

5) Holiday LED Lights ? The save power, enough said.

6) PlayMart ? This product is doing something for our kids in more ways than one!

Playground equipment and green are not typically something that you would think about in the same thought, but you should!  Why do we care about going green, getting green, being sustainable, or read sites like Treehugger.com?  Because, most of us are working to save our environment for our children and generations to come.   So please look seriously at installing backyard playground equipment alternatives to wood, especially wood that is harvested inappropriately.  Play Mart equipment makes use of recycled milk jugs, recycled metals, and other materials and then delivers them all back to your children in the shape of backyard play equipment.  We challenge you to find another product by the way that carries a 100 year warranty!!

7)   EnergyStar Special Offer/Rebate Finder ? A service that pays you back!

Our tax dollars are hard at work over at the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency when it comes to ENERGY STAR.  ENERGY STAR makes GetWithGreen.com?s 10 Best List this year because we really like their Rebate Finder.  Simply enter your zip code into the locator, check the product types you are interested in (e.g. appliances, heating and cooling equipment, home electronics, etc.), and out pops available rebates for ENERGY STAR products in your neighborhood.  How cool is that?

In a world of metal gutter protectors, 2007 saw the emergence of an alternative ? RainTube.  It blew our minds at GetWithGreen.com that we could not find an alternative metal solution (e.g. recycled aluminum, etc.).  After all, you can buy metal roofs made from 100% recycled materials!  RainTube?s eco-friendliness starts with its composition of 100% recycled plastics materials.  Once installed the product keeps your gutters clear, which helps diversion of water from your homes foundation ? thus reducing other long-term costs and the need for pesticides for termites etc.  To top it off this product is priced to sell, so we all save!

10)   Pella Windows ? Windows that work to conserve

Fully insulated windows cut down greatly on energy consumption ? especially the Designer Series from Pella.  This year homeowners voted via J.D Powers that you liked what Pella is offering, and GetWithGreen.com is voting with you.  The company is working hard to tell both their internal recycling story, the story of reused materials in their products, and the conservation of energy that their products provide.   Virtually all of our remodels will involve one or more windows.  Before you buy, take a look at Pella and their Designer Series.    

In addition to the 10 Best above, GetWithGreen wanted to recognize 3 others who made a difference in 2007. These three didn’t necessarily fit into a specific product category in 2007, but deserved a mention for their ability to influence others. 

From the big box home improvement retailers we wanted to give a mention to The Home Depot.  THD continued to evolve their eco-friendly educational material throughout the year.  You may not know it, but the company has an entire green section on their website called Eco Options!  If you don’t know this, it is probably because the company has placed Eco Options at the bottom of their website!  THD, please move Eco Options closer to the top of your page and expose your customers to your very valuable material, so that others can learn and make a difference!!

And to close things out for this Year’s 10 Best, we wanted to mention a couple of the web giants out there for committing valuable resources in an effort to spread the word about getting green.   Specifically, we are calling out the team at Microsoft with thier MSN Green website, and the team at Yahoo! with their Yahoo! Terrazzo style countertops are eco-friendly greener alternatives for your kitchen or bathroom remodel.  These countertop products are made from recycled components such as glass and porcelain, and held together with special mixtures depending on the manufacturer (usually a resin or a cement).

Working our way across the country to give you in-depth product information related to eco-friendly countertops and products, today we are stopping outside Raleigh, NC where we sit down with Michael Bustin, co-founder and lead material designer of Meld USA.

Meld USA

Since their inception over seven years ago, Meld USA has been manufacturing pre-cast concrete surfaces, furnishings, fixtures and accessories for high impact living, working and entertaining environments. Michael?s background in designer concrete came as a result of a 16 month stint in the industry marketing and selling artistic concrete products on a national level for a West Coast concrete artisan in the late 90s. With Meld USA, he and his brother, Peter Bustin, set out to deliver premium made-to-order modern concrete products and materials to clients across the nation. Since that time their business has grown, and Meld USA has delivered 35% of their products directly to homeowners and 65% to well known commercial clients such as Safeguard, Cosi, Merck Pharmaceutical, Anthropologie, Northwestern Mutual and many more.

The company?s first concrete product formula was known as extremeconcrete®, an award winning modern concrete material. Extremeconcrete was a proprietary mixture of sand, Portland cement, water, fibers and other modern concrete ingredients. Extremeconcrete began selling in 2002, was nationally trademarked in 2004, and is still available today.

In 2004, a family member, urged the two brothers to take their products one step further in an effort to do more for our environment. While the original mix of extremeconcrete was for the most part sustainable in nature, the brothers wanted to take their trademarked concrete material to the next level — formulate a sustainable concrete mixture that was as good for the environment as it was good looking. Additionally they wanted to create a material that required less aggregate to be harvested from the earth, and use less Portland cement whose creation process produces a good deal of carbon dioxide emissions.

ecoX?

Just this past summer Meld USA soft launched ecoX, as an answer to many family and design clients? requests.

The company is calling ecoX an ?eco-sensitive concrete material?. Gone are a high concentration of natural aggregates, sand, and Portland cement. These legacy contents are now replaced with 100% post-consumer and post-industrial recycled glass aggregates, recycled composite materials, and significantly less cement overall. The versatility and integrity of the product is that of traditional concrete Michael tells us, and like traditional concrete the product is great for the indoors or outdoors.

But does ecoX still look like concrete with the use of glass and recycled composite materials? The answer is partially yes, and partially no. The company has taken a unique approach to their manufacturing process whereby they typically use clear and white recycled materials. Therefore when a countertop or product is manufactured, the recycled glass and composite materials takes on the color of the concrete mixture ? maintaining the lure of concrete. Unlike standard concrete, a client will detect the beautiful recycled aggregates in the countertop as the images below show, and at the same time your countertop will acquire a patina like traditional concrete overtime.

An upcoming version of ecoX will utilize a special casting technique to ?hide? the aggregate for clients looking for the traditional concrete look from ecoX. It should be noted that with the creation of ecoX, Meld USA has modified the original composition of extremeconcrete as well. Extremeconcrete now uses less Portland cement due to a 20-25% replacement of Portland cement with post-industrial recycled materials that have cement-like qualities — see images below

Like any cement-based material, Meld USA uses a low VOC penetrating sealer on ecoX countertops and products. Countertops are stain resistant, but like many natural substances they will stain, and they are not acid resistant. Spills should be wiped up as soon as possible with soap and water, and if your surface becomes etched, then a minimum 1000-grit wet pad can be used to lightly sand the etch mark, followed by the application of a small amount of penetrating sealer to the affected area. Again, this process is no different that that recommended by some of the other concrete manufacturers GetWithGreen.com has discussed.

Close to 100% of all Meld USA products are made-to-order: countertops, tiles, furniture, fireplaces, sinks, table tops, etc. To purchase an ecoX countertop, a homeowner/client sends a kitchen, bathroom or office plan (or drawings) to Meld USA for pricing purposes. The client then works with the Meld USA team to lock in a color. The client?s contractor sends templates or dimensions, a design is created by Meld USA, and your contractor confirms. The countertop is then fabricated to spec., manufactured in North Carolina, (6-7 weeks) and then shipped in the company?s innovative Concrete-in-a-Box recycled cardboard technology to your home or place of business. (NOTE: GetWithGreen.com does feel that shipping concrete for a home countertop, while it can be easily done, is not the most eco-friendly thing to do ? thus we have worked hard to share with you various suppliers across the US, so that you might select one that is close to you).

Pricing

Most extremeconcrete/ecoX countertops range from $87-120 + per SF. Standard features include a 1.5 inch thickness, rectilinear shape, choice of 12 colors and a square/eased edge profile. Custom features such as color, texture, design, size, finished openings, etc. are virtually limitless and price accordingly.

Meld USA & Green

Internally at Meld, the company is working hard to incorporate eco-friendly initiatives and social responsibility into their daily workflow. A few of the initiatives pointed out to GetWithGreen.com were:

1. Developing a plan to become a zero waste to almost zero waste manufacturer.
2. Developing a company wide plan to reduce, reuse and recycle.
3. Developing a plan to recycle and reuse gray water.
4. Products are made to order and projects are batched utilizing our proprietary Meld concrete batching program. These measures minimize waste and off-scrap materials when manufacturing products.

As you know, we have done quite a few stories on concrete as a surface for your countertops.  While we have discussed several of the manufacturers such as Sonoma Cast Stone and VitraStone, we have not discussed the installation, nor the preparation for installation in depth.  Well we wanted to bring to your attention that this week you can see an installation first-hand on TV. 

This Friday night (November 9th) at 9pm, “Fashioning a Home with Clinton Kelly” on The Learning Channel (TLC) will feature the design, manufacture, and installation of a concrete countertop into a home.  The countertop provider is Concrete Encounter of Fairfield, CT.

Continuing with our trend of bringing you the most up-to-date information about greener countertop materials, GetWithGreen.com sat down with Joel Klippert to discuss his new company and countertop product – EcoTop!

In the Beginning

Before we get into the details of EcoTop, we need to introduce you to EcoTop creator, Joel Klippert.  While Joel’s product is just now hitting the market, Joel is by far no stranger to eco-friendly countertops.  In 2001 Joel founded KlipTech Composites, Inc., and produced the well know PaperStone countertop product.  At the time Joel wanted a strong, durable product made out of recycled materials.  Being an early innovator in the eco-friendly countertop market, Joel’s team created the best product they could offer at time given that supporting suppliers (e.g. paper, wood, & resin) were less interested in our environment.  Pushing forward, Joel brought PaperStone to market, and since that time it has grown to what we all know it as today. 

In 2007 Joel left the PaperStone team, and went underground founding Klip BioTechnologies, LLC.  Klippert was not sitting idle, instead he was continuing his longtime goal of advancing countertop materials even further.  Joel was set on a mission to create the most durable and color fast countertop material on the market, and one that had mass consumer market appeal.  The product had to appeal to his family, their friends, and the mainstream residential market, or it was not going to be a success in his mind. 

Joel assembled a dream team of inventors and financiers to assist him in bringing his game changing vision to life.  Suppliers who weren’t interested in green alternatives at the time PaperStone came to life, were now embracing Klippert’s efforts.  Billion dollar companies were stepping up to the plate.  With master chemists (and team) he needed to formulate a resin (material binding the product together) that was eco-friendly, strong/binding, and light in actual color, because the original PaperStone product was limited to dark colors due to a reliance on a dark resin. 

EcoTop

The outcome of the past year, is what we will all soon know very well as EcoTop.  EcoTop is made from 50% recycled wood & paper, and 50% bamboo.  The only tree fibers in the product are recycled fibers (vs. virgin fiber used in some other products).  The resin that binds the wood, paper, and bamboo is 100% water base, and VOC and petroleum free.

EcoTop is UV stable, and therefore will not fade, or change.  The product is durable.  Joel is quick to point out that EcoTop is a solid surface that could compete with Corian.  The product has the strength of a Phenolic (used in PaperStone and Richlite), with the color fastness and consistence of Formica, a decorative laminate.  The product can be sealed, but it is not required.  The company does offer an all natural organic Soy Oil, Palm Oil & carnuba,wax finish.  Any scratches can be simply sanded out with a ScothBrite pad or sand paper on a random orbit sander.  EcoTop is easy to repair with standard tools, says Klippert.  According to Joel, the product can be used anywhere from the kitchen to the garage.   EcoTop does not harbor bacteria. 

There are three EcoTop colors in production at the company’s large capacity 300,000 sq/ft manufacturing plant in Tacoma, Washington:  Black, Snow White, and Ivory (off-white).  By the first quarter 2008 they expect to have ten colors in production.  EcoTop is sold factory direct at this moment, but it won’t be that way for long.  The product is soon to be sold via a nationwide network of whose/who of distributors and retailers! 

Retail pricing for EcoTop is expected to start at approx. $35 a sq. ft.  EcoTop comes by the sheet in ¾” or 1″ thick in 30″ & 60″ wide by 12′ in length.  EcoTop is the ultimate DIY product as well, as it only takes wood working tools to install such as a circular saw, router and random orbit sander.  Klippert states, that this is the only solid surface product on the market that a DIYer can install and still maintain the 10 year warranty.
